2024 Trends: Priorities and Interactions

Welcome!

Thank you for your readiness to answer this survey, and so help us prepare the IFLA Trend Report 2024.

Through this, we are trying to identify which combinations of trends matter most for libraries, in order then to create scenarios that can be used for planning.

Your answers are anonymous, although we do collect some contextual information in order to help understand the data. We would therefore first like to ask some background questions.
1. Are you answering on behalf of an IFLA unit, as an association or institution, as an individual or as an IFLA staffer? *This question is required.
2. In which region are you based? *This question is required.
3. How many years of experience do you have in the library field? *This question is required.
4. Which of the below best describes your situation? *This question is required.
The 2024 Trend Report will focus on trends in knowledge and information, and how they impact on (and are impacted by) the wider world. The goal is to provide ideas about the forces that may be shaping the core mission of libraries to enable access to and use of knowledge and information, both as a right in itself, and a condition for achieving other development goals.

In this context, the 2024 Trend Report Literature Review highlights 7 major Trends, which could have both positive and negative implications:
  • Trend 1: Knowledge practices are changing, and the future holds both opportunities and challenges for equity in knowledge systems
  • Trend 2: AI and other technologies are transforming society, and how we create, share and use information
  • Trend 3: Trust is being renegotiated, especially in government and media
  • Trend 4: Skills and abilities are becoming more complex, but also essential
  • Trend 5: Digital technologies and their benefits are unevenly distributed
  • Trend 6: Information systems are using more resources, impacting the planet
  • Trend 7: People are seeking community connections – spaces to share are key
The following questions all relate to these. To find out more about them, please see the Literature Review Overview, or the full Literature Review in its preliminary version.

In the first section, we ask about your thoughts about how each of these Trends will impact society as a whole, the library sector as a whole, and your particular library. It then asks whether you think these Trends will increase or decrease the need for libraries.

The second section will focus more on interactions between the Trends you think are most important.

The second half of this survey asks you to think about how you see the different Trends affecting each other. This will help us define potential scenarios.

In each case, you will be asked to think about how far, for each of the priority Trends you have identified, they are related with other Trends. You will have the possibility to say more about what these relationships look like, where you say that you see a strong connection.
8. Which trends do you think are most relevant for libraries? Pick as many as you want  *This question is required.
