Manage Negative Emotional Triggers

You will create plans to manage three of the triggers that you identified in the previous activity: "Identify Negative Emotional Triggers". To make your plan, you will need the "Monitor Negative Triggers" form that you completed in that activity.

In this exercise, you will
  • Choose three of your triggers from your Monitoring Form
  • Learn several strategies to deal effectively with negative emotional triggers
  • Create custom plans to manage each of your three triggers
1. Select Three of Your Triggers

To select three triggers that you would like to manage better, start by examining each of the triggers on your Monitoring Form.

First, look at the your emotional distress ratings. We recommend that you pick triggers that are somewhat to moderately distressing to you. You may not want to pick a trigger that is very distressing until you have had practice with the techniques for trigger management.

Next, look at your ratings of the likelihood of the trigger in the future. We suggest that it is most worthwhile to focus on triggers that are moderately to very likely to occur in the future.

Hopefully, you can identify three triggers that are somewhat to moderately distressing and moderately to very likely to occur in the future.
