What the research involves
You are invited to participate in this national survey of the Australian Primary Health Care (PHC) nursing and midwifery workforce, conducted by the Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association (APNA). The PHC nursing and midwifery workforce includes nurses and midwives working in non-hospital settings, including in general practice, community health, residential care, correctional services, Aboriginal health services, schools and defence. The aim of this survey is to better understand PHC nurses and midwives and their work, as a basis for informing policy, advocacy and practice.

The survey questionnaire should take approximately 30 minutes to complete. You will be asked to answer a range of single and multiple-choice questions, as well as some brief, text-based questions on personal, professional, workplace and regular nursing and midwifery activity details.

Who can participate in the survey
Anyone meeting the definition of a PHC nurse or midwife will be able to participate in this survey. You do not need to be a member of APNA to participate in this survey.

Completion and withdrawal
While it is important that you complete all items in the questionnaire, you can make choices to complete or not complete certain sections (including remaining anonymous), or to withdraw from completing the questionnaire at any stage. Once you have submitted your responses, it will not be possible to withdraw from the survey if you have chosen to remain anonymous.

Payment
PHC nurses and midwives who complete all questionnaire items and provide their contact details will go into a draw for a range of prizes, including one of 10 x $100 cash cards and one of 2 x $1000 Red Balloon vouchers.

Confidentiality
The researchers will ensure that all precautions are in place to protect your confidentiality and privacy at all times. You will be asked to consider providing identifying details so that we can match responses over multiple annual surveys. However, you can choose to participate anonymously. Any personally identifying information will be kept strictly confidential and an identity code will be allocated to you based on elements of any personal details you provide. All data will be analysed in a way that minimises any likelihood of you being personally identified. Data will be stored on password protected computers and computer servers. Only the lead researchers and APNA data managers will be able to access your personal identifying information. Unless required by law, personally identifying data will not be disclosed to anyone without your permission.

Survey results
Survey data will be aggregated, analysed and disseminated for publication in journal and newsletter articles, conference presentations and reports. Results summaries will be published in APNA journals, newsletters and the APNA website annually. Survey results will be used to inform policy, advocacy, practice and ongoing research.
