Tech2Empower Bay Area: Food and Housing Justice

Thank you for your interest in joining as an Advisor for Tech2Empower Bay Area: Food and Housing Justice. This initiative, taking place on November 8, 2024 in San Francisco followed by 4 weeks of virtual collaboration closing on December 6, 2024. This is a project of WAKE aimed at harnessing the power of technology, volunteerism, and collaboration to address urgent crises in food and housing justice within the Bay Area. This program connects tech industry professionals with local nonprofits to work on impactful projects that enhance the nonprofits’ ability to serve their communities effectively.

Read the list of the impact projects requested by participating nonprofits. Once you are confirmed as a volunteer Advisor, you will have the opportunity to identify your top 3 projects where you think your skills best match. 


Tech2Empower Bay Area Advisors have the unique opportunity to:

  • Collaborate directly with nonprofits by providing technical assistance, training, and tools on projects designed to enhance their operations and expand their impact in the sectors of food and housing.
  • Build community with leaders in social justice and fellow Advisors.
  • Network with peers from leading tech companies and like-minded individuals committed to social change.
  • Gain a profound personal and professional development experience that not only amplifies the work of frontline organizations but also deepens your understanding of critical social issues.

Tech2Empower Advisor Participation Details:
  • In-person collaboration: Advisors will collaborate with their nonprofit partners in San Francisco all day November 8 (9am-5pm) for intensive project work, including strategy sessions and planning. Advisors are also invited and encouraged to attend a fun, interactive community event the evening of Thursday, November 7 (6pm-8pm). 

  • Virtual Collaboration: Over the following four weeks beginning November 11, Advisors and their nonprofit teams will continue their collaboration virtually, dedicating about 3 hours per week. This phase includes weekly meetings to refine project scopes, set goals, and achieve milestones toward project completion (with flexibility encouraged for the holiday week of November 25).

Outcomes:

  • Nonprofits benefit from cost-free expertise and partnership that significantly advance their chosen impact projects, enhancing their services in food and housing security.
  • Advisors contribute valuable skills and time, engage in meaningful social impact work, and build enduring relationships with nonprofit leaders, often extending beyond the program’s duration.
Commitment from Advisors:
  • All Advisors who successfully match with a nonprofit commit to the full timeline of the program, from initial in-person collaboration through to the virtual project completion.
  • Participate in an orientation session, the program kickoff, ongoing independent project work, and a closing virtual event.
  • Participation from Advisors includes a $500 donation to assist in delivering a quality program to all. This donation allows us to provide this beneficial support to the participating nonprofits at no cost. (Fundraising and sponsorship opportunities are available). 

Advisor Application + Important Dates
  • Application open: June 3, 2024
  • Applicant acceptance: On a rolling basis. Space is limited so apply early.
  • Tech2Empower Bay Area in-person program dates: November 8, 2024 (plus, an evening, community event on November 7, 2024)
  • Virtual Collaboration dates: November 11 - December 6, 2024
  • Virtual Program Closing Celebration: Friday, December 6, 2024

Tech2Empower is an initiative of WAKE, a nonprofit organization based in San Francisco. We partner with local organizations for all of our initiatives. We are committed to making Tech2Empower a rich, rewarding, inclusive and meaningful experience for Advisors and local participants. The WAKE team will provide assistance with all aspects of the Tech2Empower program, including relevant materials, background information and ongoing support to ensure Advisors are well-prepared for their roles, meet inspiring activists, and have unique learning and volunteer experiences.
