The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is seeking suggestions for experts to be considered for the membership rotation or other engagement with the Committee on Astronomy and Astrophysics (CAA), a committee of the Space Studies Board. The CAA is an independent, authoritative forum for identifying and discussing issues in astronomy and astrophysics with the research community, the federal government, and the interested public. The committee supports scientific progress in astronomy and astrophysics by providing advice to the federal government on the implementation of decadal survey recommendations.
Using these suggestions, National Academies staff will be looking to fill four open seats on the committee of approximately 16 total volunteer experts in addition to collecting information for potential speakers, participants, and other forms of engagement. Based on the Statement of Task and the continuing membership of the committee, staff are looking for expertise particularly in the following areas:
- Ground-Based Observations (including optical, infrared, and radio observations)
- Particle Astrophysics and High-Energy Phenomena (including cosmic rays, neutrinos, gamma rays, and related astrophysical sources)
- Cosmology (including large-scale structure, dark matter, dark energy, the cosmic microwave background, and the early universe)
- Compact Objects, Stellar Evolution, and Energetic Phenomena (including black holes, neutron stars, supernovae, and related astrophysical processes)
- The Sun, Stars, and Stellar Populations (including stellar physics, stellar evolution, and galactic stellar distributions)
- Cross-disciplinary areas in Astrophysics (including multi-messenger astronomy, machine learning applications, and interdisciplinary collaborations)
