Community PFAS Outreach Grant

PFAS (per and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of chemicals that are widespread in the environment and may cause harm to human health. You can find more information about these chemicals and concerns on our website

Who Should Apply
We're seeking to support local organizations and programs that can help connect with people about local concerns with PFAS. We are looking for organizations that have a strong connection to traditionally marginalized or underserved communities and people who live along or frequent Starkweather Creek and other affected Madison waterways.

Proposed Activities
Your proposed activities should address one or both of the following areas:
  • Increase awareness and knowledge of PFAS, including its impact on human health.
  • Help communities or individuals to take practical action to minimize exposure to them chemicals.

Local projects and partnerships are the key for all people in our communities to have fair and just access to the conditions that promote health.

Grant Amounts
Grants will be awarded to community groups or individuals that propose to use funding to provide outreach and foster community engagement about PFAS to people who live in Madison*, especially traditionally marginalized or underserved. A total of $30,000 is available this year with anticipated award amounts ranging from $5,000  - $10,000. A review panel will determine awards. We will ask you to report to us to highlight impact stories and discuss project progress. We will request reports 3 months and 6 months after the award is distributed. 



Timeline
  • Application window opens April 10, 2024
  • Applications due May 3, 2024
  • Applicants will be informed of decisions May 24, 2024
  • Funds will be dispersed starting June 1, 2024
Paper applications are available upon request. Applications may be submitted verbally by participating in a virtual meeting with our staff that will be recorded for evaluation by the reviewers. 

Scoring
We will score applications based on the following criteria:
  • How well does the proposal reflect the current science of PFAS?
  • Does the applicant provide evidence or demonstrate that the proposal would be effective in increasing awareness of community members to concerns related to PFAS and taking effective action to minimize exposure and reduce harm?
  • Does the proposal clearly identify the community that the project will attempt to engage in PFAS awareness and/or risk reduction? 
  • Does the proposal demonstrate a commitment to working with cultural humility in geographic areas or alongside communities who have been impacted by societal marginalization?
  • Does the proposal effectively support new or existing initiatives?
