2024 AICAD Symposium
Teach for Tomorrow: Re-Designing the Future

Call For Proposals - ArtCenter College of Design - November 13th-15th, 2024

Thank you for your interest in submitting a proposal for the 2024 AICAD Academic Symposium! We appreciate your willingness to share your professional expertise with your community. The deadline for submitting a proposal is June 1st, 2024.

Join ArtCenter College of Design and the larger Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD) community for the AICAD Symposium, the annual gathering on teaching and learning in art and design. This year, 2024 presents great challenges for creative and professional practice in ways that echo the massive moments of change from the past. How can we, as educators, prepare students and our own communities for this new world of teaching, learning and working? What traditions remain intact in this emerging landscape and where do we look for guidance and inspiration as we make our way forward? Please join us in Pasadena in November as we gather to explore how we will teach for tomorrow (and re-design the future!). Proposals are welcome for the following topic threads: AI, Machine Learning and Emerging Technology; New Learners and New Pathways; Pedagogy and Practice; and Graduate Education and Research. Woven through these threads should be themes of sustainability and diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility and belonging. There will be options for different session types that can be selected when submitting a proposal — please consider whether you would like to deliver a talk or presentation, unpack your course (syllabus swap), run an interactive workshop, create a demonstration, or be a part of a panel or roundtable.

Four topic threads:

AI, Machine Learning and Emerging Technology — How are you using or introducing these tools into the classroom or studio? What preparation did you need and how are you getting your students ready? What outcomes are you seeing and what potential impact on student work and implications for future directions are emerging?

New Learners and New Pathways — How are the students of today different from those who came before? What are some of the expectations they’re bringing with them when they enter? How are you meeting them where they are at? And how are you getting them to where you want them to be? And what about the students of tomorrow? This thread is open to degree and non-degree programing (continuing education, Extension courses, certificates, credentials, etc.). Also consider where your students are heading after they leave your program (big picture) and how are we preparing them for that next step?

Pedagogy and Practice — Be prepared to unpack your class and share with colleagues how you approach your specific course, topic or discipline. What are some favorite exercises or projects you run and how do you do it (and with what impact for your students)? What are some of your favorite classroom techniques or practices that might be useful for others in similar or different fields?

Graduate Education and Research — Formal research is an emerging field in art and design education. What do we need to do to prepare our students to work with human subjects and protected populations in an ethical way? What is the role of an Institutional Review Board (IRB) in this process (and do you have one yet)? Consider also how graduate education is distinct in our disciplines from undergraduate education. What are our expectations around theses (projects and/or papers, for example) and how do we help students be successful who might be coming to our graduate programs from other fields or areas of study?

Session Types:

Talks and presentations [slots for 1 hour or two half-hour presenters]

Roundtables and panels [1.5 hours, multiple presenters]

Unpacking my course (syllabus swap) [1 hour, individual or multiple presenters]

Interactive workshops [1.5 hours, individual or co-presenters]

Demonstrations [1 hour, individual or co-presenters]

Structure:

Identify the thread (topic category) when submitting a proposal and indicate your ideal session type. These threads will be used for proposal submission and for symposium organization and scheduling, and will be included, along with a unique visual identity on the program (guide).

Threads will be clearly identified in the program so participants can choose to follow a topic through multiple sessions if they wish to do a deep dive with colleagues through the three days of presentations and events.

AICAD Session Presenter Policy:

Proposals are selected on the basis of information submitted. Presenters, titles, and content are expected to correspond to the proposal. Any speaker substitutions, deletions, or additions must be approved by the 2024 Conference Planning Committee.

AICAD sessions are noncommercial. Under no circumstances should the podium be used as a place for direct promotion of a presenter's product, service, or monetary self-interest. Presenters also must refrain from overt statements, harsh language, or pointed humor that disparages the rightful dignity and social equity of any individual or group. All attendees of the conference agree to abide by the AICAD Community Agreement.

All proposals are due June 1st, 2024.
