HS STE HQIM Leadership Academy Application

Welcome

Thank you for your interest in the HS STE HQIM Leadership Academy. The goal of this program is to build in-district capacity to lead the launch and support culturally and linguistically sustaining implementation of high-quality science high school curricula. Participating teams may come from one district, or multiple districts may apply together as a regional collaborative. Each team may have between 3-6 individual participants.

The Academy will have the following structure:
  • An in-person, three-day summer institute either the week of:
    •  August 5, 2024 or August 19, 2024
    • (you will be able to indicate preference and availability in this form)
  • Three (3) one-day workshops, likely virtual, throughout the school year
  • Virtual office hours between in-person workshops
  • Optional individual check-ins and technical assistance
Requirements for Participation:
  • Districts must be committed to implementing BSCS Biology: Understanding for Life OR at least one OpenSciEd course (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics) during either the 2024-2025 OR 2025-2026 school year. Letters of assurance will be required to attest to this.
  • Letters of support from the instructional supervisors (principal, assistant principal) of teachers who will be involved in implementation are also required.
  • Teachers who will be involved in the implementation will be asked to complete a form affirming their knowledge of the curriculum implementation.
  • It is expected that the entire leadership team will attend the in-person workshops, and that at minimum, each team will have representation at the virtual workshops.
  • Each team will develop a district (or collaborative) professional learning plan for their implementation year.
  • It is not required for all content teachers in the district (eg, all Biology teachers) to be part of the implementation. It is more important that the teachers who will be involved are on board with the adoption.
As a result of their participation, district/collaborative teams can expect:
  • Training in the learning models embedded in science HQIM
  • Training in culturally and linguistically sustaining science instructional practices
  • Training and resources to support leading and facilitating science HQIM professional learning
  • Opportunity to network and pool resources with other participating districts in the cohort
  • Opportunity to apply for initial funding for teacher stipends and/or kits and materials
Composition of a district team:
For best results, district teams should consist of at least one individual who has authority to plan professional learning dates for teachers in the district. Other team members may include potential in-district facilitators, coaches, curriculum coordinators, lead teachers, department heads and/or others who would support teacher learning and implementation.

Applications are due by Wednesday, April 24, 2024.
1. I, the applicant and primary contact person on behalf of my district or collaborative, understand and commit to the listed requirements for participation.
