Foundation of the AAGL - 2024 Research Grant Application

Calling All Investigators!
The MIGS Simulation Grant Program is Open

Background:

The Foundation of the AAGL is seeking proposals to support MIGS Simulation Research endeavors in the field of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery such as researching laparoscopic and hysteroscopic simulation platforms, resident and faculty attitudes about EMIGS, the impact of EMIGS on OR performance, resident confidence, and performance on in-training exams and board exams, etc. These grants are intended to encourage, foster and facilitate the exchange and dissemination of knowledge, information, skills and techniques.

Grants are now available and range between $3,000 to $10,000 each. Grants will be awarded based on EMIGS Research Committee review, approval and recommendation for the Foundation of the AAGL board’s approval. The grant amount awarded will be based on the proposed budget.

Criteria:
  1. Current US-based residents, FMIGS fellows, or early-career physicians.
  2. Access to the EMIGS platform and didactic.
  3. The aims and objectives of the research must be clearly defined in the proposal.
  4. The proposal must clearly define the research methodology, plans for recruitment and statistical analysis.
  5. The applicant must have the capacity to successfully conduct the proposed research (e.g., facilities, equipment, etc.).
  6. Budget for project must be included.
  7. JMIG has the first right of publication.

Deadline to apply is April 1, 2024.   Award winners will be announced by June 1, 2024.   If funding is still available, we will open another round of  applications again after June 1, 2024. The Foundation of the AAGL will accept grant applications until the funding has been disbursed.  Once all funding has been awarded, the application process will close.

Research Examples:
  • Comparing EMIGS to FLS
  • Comparing EMIGS performance with the in-training or ABOG qualifying exam performance
  • Review of resident comfort level and anxiety performing in the operating room
  • Two-year skill retention and certification exam performance and proficiency maintenance after FLS vs EMIGS
  • Skill Retention (Learning) in First Year OBGYN residents after EMIGS training.
  • Does EMIGS Simulation training and certification improve proficiency in the operating room?
  • Maintaining proficiency after EMIGS training: A 1-year analysis of skill retention for OBGYN residents
  • A method to characterize the learning curve for performance of a EMIGS simulator tasks: Defining a learning plateau and a learning rate
  • Self-Assessment versus Performance
  • Field Rating versus Central Rating of EMIGS
  • Comparison of EMIGS Rating using video alone, +/- specimen review vs static images of specimens
  • Global Rating versus EMIGS Rating
  • Gestalt Pass/Fail versus EMIGS Rating
  • Comparison of EMIG vs Crowd Sourcing
  • EMIGS pass vs FLS pass (first attempt)
  • Compare PGY-1 current data versus as PGY-3
  • EMIGS + Feedback (CREOG Exam) vs Traditional Training, RCT evaluating EMIGS as a formative assessment
  • Comparison of Resident Preference FLS vs EMIGS
  • EMIGS vs FLS training for vaginal vault suturing model performance

8. Research Plan - Please attach a research plan using the following format:
  • Introduction
  • Hypothesis
  • Literature review:  Should clearly describe background to support the significance of the proposed study.
  • Primary Aim(s)
  • Secondary Aims(s)
  • Methods: Describe in detail how the proposed research data will be obtained
    • Inclusion:
    • Exclusion:
  • Interventions
  • Outcomes

11. Budget Estimates
Provide a budget that describes how EMIGS grant funds will be utilized in support of the project. Funds, for example, may be used towards laboratory tests, supplies or equipment, statistical support, or simulation compensation.

(Provide best reasonable estimates of costs. There are no precise guidelines or limits to budgeted amounts, but examples from past projects have ranged from no cost or several hundred dollars for local statistical support in a retrospective chart review to $5-$10k when considering participant gift cards in a prospective study. Funds from the EMIGS grant cannot support institutional Facilities & Administrative costs—i.e. “indirects”.)

12. Institutional Support:
If you are a trainee, please attach one of the following:
  1. Letter of support from your program director, department chair, or faculty research advisor; or,
  2. Description of the support of your resident/fellowship program (e.g., if the study is approved, would one of your local faculty plan to co-mentor the study?)
