BPHC Workforce Well-being Technical Assistance | Community of Practice Application

The Communities of Practice (CoP) are an important technical assistance opportunity designed for health centers who are committed to implementing, or are already implementing, workforce well-being initiatives. Each CoP focuses on a topic that addresses one of the key drivers of workforce well-being to assist health centers with creating, implementing, and evaluating individualized Action Plans. CoPs will comprise up to 30 participants who will meet for 90 minutes every other week over a four-month period. In addition, participants can receive additional optional technical support in between meetings during our scheduled office hours. 

Community of Practice 1: Improving Job Satisfaction through Leadership Styles that Support Workplace Well-being Efforts
1/17/23 - 4/24/23, Every other Wednesday (8 Sessions), 12:00-1:30 PM MT / 2:00-3:30 PM ET
This Community of Practice focuses on helping leaders improve their skills in order to drive the change necessary to improve workforce well-being. By the end of this CoP, participants should be able to:
  • Apply and teach leadership skills that generate high level of motivation & commitment amongst diverse staff.
  • Implement effective leadership skills that improve communication with their employees.
  • Reframe their communication style to clearly convey expectations and timelines. 
  • Create a vision of a workplace that promotes quality of life and develop strategies to make their health center a good place to work.
  • Develop a personal action plan to improve their leadership style in a way that exemplifies and promotes workforce well-being.

Community of Practice 2: Addressing Burnout by Implementing Organizational Approaches to Work Life Balance
1/23/23-4/30/23, Every Other Tuesday, 12:00-1:30 PM MT / 2:00-3:30 PM ET
This Community of Practice will focus on organizational strategies that leaders can apply systematically in their health centers. Understand the critical role of organizational strategies in mitigating burn-out, including creating a task force, assigning leadership, enabling culture, and managing resources. By the end of this CoP, participants should be able to:
  • Analyze their organization's current challenges related to workload, administrative burdens, technology usability, and workplace culture that contribute to burnout.
  • Evaluate how leadership behaviors impact the effectiveness of organizational strategies, including exemplifying balance, maintaining a positive mindset, addressing stress & managing emotions.
  • Assess a range of organizational approaches and policies, such as developing a role responsible for workforce well-being, flexible work arrangements, time management training, recognition & rewards, well-being programs, leadership development, family-friendly policies, and mental health resources, and choose and implement those suitable for their organization's context.
  • Establish meaningful metrics for measuring the impact of chosen organizational strategies on employee well-being and burnout reduction, and make data-driven adjustments to optimize their effectiveness.
  • Develop an action plan to cultivate organizational strategies that prioritizes work-life balance, aligns with employee values, and fosters social support.
Community of Practice 3: Building a Positive and Diverse Workplace Culture that Promotes Workforce Well-being
1/25/23-5/02/23, Every other Thursday, 12:00-1:30 PM MT / 2:00-3:30 PM ET
This Community of Practice will cover the topics necessary to design and implement a culture of workforce well-being within a health center. By the end of this Community of Practice, participants will be able to:
  • Understand the critical importance of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in the workplace and healthcare settings, and develop strategies to promote these principles, including recruitment policies, awareness training, and accessibility accommodations.
  • Create strategies to improve the quality of life for staff members fostering a positive workplace environment that prioritizes well-being.
  • Develop and implement objective criteria for employee advancement based on work quality and abilities to ensure fair opportunities.
  • Analyze and enhance communication dynamics within the organization to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable discussing difficult issues, promoting psychological safety and effective change management.
  • Develop an action plan to build a positive and diverse workplace culture that promotes workforce well-being.
Participants of this CoP can expect to engage with a supportive community comprising a variety of health care professionals. By implementing change management strategies, participants will foster a positive workplace culture at their health center. During the sessions, we will draft SMART goals to measure progress towards improvement in workplace culture.
