NAM Communications Advisory Group

Call for Nominations

Effective communications and authentic engagement with diverse audiences and communities are integral to the success of the NAM’s mission. Yet, the information environment is complex and rapidly changing, introducing challenges that require novel tools, innovative approaches, and cutting-edge expertise. To that end, the NAM will appoint an advisory group to inform the direction of communications and engagement activities at the National Academy of Medicine. The Communications Advisory Group will be tasked with:
  • Reviewing and providing advice on the NAM’s audiences and communications activities, resources, and capabilities
  • Advising on emerging trends, tools, and strategies relevant to NAM communications
  • Identifying communications and engagement priorities, including but not limited to those specified in the NAM’s 2024-2028 Strategic Plan, such as:
    • Addressing misinformation and rebuilding trust in scientific institutions
    • Broadening and diversifying the NAM’s audience base, including through community engagement
    • Understanding the impact of new AI tools on communication and leveraging AI appropriately
  • Providing advice on fundraising to support the expansion of NAM communications
  • Providing input to inform a Strategic Framework for NAM Communications
The advisory group will have approximately 15 member volunteers, who will serve 2-year terms starting in January 2024. Members will meet virtually 4 times per year and provide ad hoc input by email (a total of approximately 15 hours annually). We are seeking a mix of experts and practitioners to join the advisory group, with a particular interest in individuals with the following expertise and perspectives (listed alphabetically):
  • AI integration and emerging trends in communications
  • Community engagement
  • Content strategy and creation
  • Crisis communications
  • Data and analytics
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Fundraising
  • Informal STEM education
  • Issue advocacy
  • Media outreach
  • Political diversity

We are seeking nominations for members of this advisory group by December 15, 2023, including self-nominations. Nominees do NOT have to be members of the NAM (or NAS or NAE).
