RAC Anti-Racism & Vilification Consultation

Welcome to the registration for consultations on racial and religious vilification and discrimination hosted by the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission (VEOHRC) and the Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC).

Community views and opinions from the consultation will feed into three projects that VEOHRC is currently undertaking:

  1. A research paper on the drivers of racial and religious vilification and effective prevention strategies
  2. A guideline for workplaces to prevent and respond to racial discrimination.
  3. An options paper exploring a third party (community led) reporting mechanism to report vilification and hate crimes.

We are eager to hear from multicultural, multifaith and First Nations community members throughout Victoria on six questions:

Project (a): preventing vilification.

  1. What do you think has worked well in past or current attempts to prevent hate speech?
  2. Where are you most concerned about hate speech and incitement (e.g., online, schools, work, in public)?

Project (b): workplace race discrimination guideline

  1. What does workplace race discrimination look like?
  2. What could workplaces do to better prevent (and respond to) race discrimination?

Project (c): options for improved community reporting

  1. How effective are current tools for reporting racial and religious vilification?
  2. What would an improved community reporting tool look like and how could it increase confidence to report racial and religious vilification?

The discussions will be future, and solutions focused. Community members will not be asked to speak to their personal circumstances but rather speak to broader community experiences.

The consultations will be conducted over Zoom.  Please register for one of the sessions in this form and you will be emailed the Zoom link.  We encourage you to join a roundtable in your regional area however you may choose any date that is convenient even if it is in a different region.

Participation
The roundtables will be conducted in English.  If participants feel unable to share their views in the roundtable, they will be invited to email VEOHRC after the session.
You may also participate in our online survey which will be available in a number of languages. We will share the links with you once the survey is live.  We will also share the links again at the roundtable.

Use of information and consent
At the beginning of each roundtable, we will ask for your verbal consent to use de-identified statements and opinions from the roundtables in our final reports and guideline. This means that we will not attribute any quote or opinions to individuals or organisations unless we have a separate agreement to do so.

Privacy
We will record the roundtables so that we can accurately record what was said.  We will not share the recordings with anyone. Please read our attached privacy information statement which details measures in place to protect your privacy.
