Thank you for your interest in being a Teacher at District Clay Center!  

District Clay Center strives to cultivate and promote the ceramic arts in the DMV region through quality education, exhibitions, and an extensive array of studio equipment. Our clay community embraces creativity, diversity, inclusion, respect, and a welcoming environment for students and artists of all levels. District Clay values freedom of artistic expression as essential to our clay community.

To this end, District Clay currently provides regular instruction and specialized workshops in wheel-throwing, hand-building, slip-casting, and alternative firings; a library of ceramic literature; a community artist program; community events, including semi-annual sales; and exhibitions by regional students and artists.


DCC's teachers are at the heart of what we provide to our students.

Teacher responsibilities include:
  • Orienting new students to DCC, familiarizing them with the studio and our programs
  • Doing at least one beginner demo per class and will spend the initial part of each class working with beginning students
  • Doing at least one advanced demo per class
  • Checking in on each student individually to see if they need assistance
  • At the end of each ten-week session, inviting students to bring a piece they made during the session and discuss what they liked and did not like
  • Selling clay to students
  • Moving around and handling student ware on ware carts as needed
  • Willing to uphold and encourage excellent cleaning standards
  • Opening or closing the studio, depending on the class time & acting as Manager on Duty as needed
Qualified candidates should:
  • All applicants must be vaccinated against Covid-19 to be considered for employment
  • Have an undergraduate degree in ceramics, art, or teaching, OR have 1-2 years prior experience teaching ceramics
  • Understand and desire to teach about ceramic art
  • Have knowledge of a diversity of ceramic techniques, art, and history
  • Commit to at least 6 months of employment
  • Keep calm in a busy environment
  • Pay attention to detail
  • Possess excellent communication skills
  • Respect and uplift people of diverse abilities, ages, ethnicities, genders, and races
