UNITY-IWES Hurricane Preparedness Research Interest Form

Factors Impacting Hurricane Emergency Preparedness among Low-Income and Other Vulnerable Populations of Orleans and Jefferson Parishes

The purpose of this study:

The Institute of Women & Ethnic Studies (IWES), in partnership with UNITY of Greater New Orleans (UNITY), seeks to understand the natural disaster-related experiences of particularly vulnerable populations, including but not limited to unstably housed and economically disadvantaged individuals living in metro-New Orleans (Orleans and Jefferson parishes) and their emergency evacuation, sheltering, resource, and service needs in the event and immediate aftermath of hurricanes and storm-related impacts.

What can be expected of participants:

We would like to speak to both providers and residents. Participants will be asked questions about their personal experiences preparing for a major hurricane event and/or their experience supporting others in preparing for a major hurricane. Interviews and focus groups will take place in-person or via the Zoom videoconferencing platform and will be audio and video recorded.

For Provider Participants:
As a provider in this study, you can expect to participate in a 60 to 90-minute one-on-one interview. Conversations with providers are meant only to improve understanding and support for future service provision. Provider identity will be kept confidential and will not be shared with their employer or anyone else outside of IWES.
Providers will be compensated with a $75 gift card.

For Resident Participants:
As a resident in this study, you can expect to participate in either 1) a 25-30 minute interviewer-administered survey, 2) a 60 to 90-minute one-on-one interview, or 3) a 2-hour focus group with 5 to 7 other New Orleans area residents. Residents will be compensated with a $100 gift card.

We ask that you please complete this Interest Form if you would like to participate as a provider and/or if you would like to connect us to residents you serve.

With gratitude,

UNITY & IWES
