Reciprocity Request Form

WA AOC Reciprocity Process

Thank you for your interested in receiving reciprocity in Washington State.

Reciprocity

If you already have court interpreter credentials in a registered language from another state, you may be able to get your credentials in Washington through reciprocity. To get reciprocity in Washington, you must have passed the written exam and the oral language comprehension exams to the same standards that Washington requires.

Filling out this form and uploading your credentialing letters will cover Step 1 and Step 2. We will let you know when you are ready to move onto the rest of the steps.

First Step :

  • Provide written documentation of passing the written exam and oral language comprehension exams from the administering state.
  • Provide a letter from the certification program stating that the interpreter is in good standing
WA AOC will contact you when the document verification results are satisfactory, and you can proceed to the next step. Please do not proceed to the next step until you are notified.

Second Step
  • Attend a mandatory class on the Introduction to Court Interpreting, and Court Interpreting Ethics and Protocol provided by the Washington AOC.
  • Submit a fingerprint background check.
  • Execute the Oath of Interpreter.
  • Obtain an interpreter ID badge from the Washington AOC.
If you received your credentials from the Oregon Court Interpreter Certification Program, then are exempt from the Ethics and Protocol Class requirements.

If you received your credentials from another state that uses different language comprehension exams than the ones that Washington uses, you may still be eligible for reciprocity. The Issues Committee for the Interpreter Commission will make the final decision on reciprocity in this case.
