New York City's Department of Education's Division of Multilingual Learners is looking for multilingual and immigrant families to participate in the GenConnect Program for six consecutive Saturdays starting from May 6 - June 10, 2023, from 10 am-1 pm.
The GenConnect Program is a six-week program offering families (one guardian plus one child) the opportunity to explore and expand their leadership through a culturally responsive experiential lens. During the six weeks, families will celebrate their cultural heritage and appreciate the value of their linguistic skills through multiculturalist activities and community engagement. In addition, families will be encouraged to engage in conversations about money, education, and careers - cultivating understanding to address biases around multilingualism, native languages, cultures, and norms, addressing the substantial benefits of bilingualism to cognitive and affective development as well as the workforce and society at large. Lastly, the workshop will engage and enable families to be community leaders advocating for their needs by connecting families to government agencies such as community affairs, community boards, council members, and business improvement districts. Each family that completes the six weeks will receive a certificate of completion and a $300 honorarium.
