Welcome, and thank you for your interest in the REALM Study! Here, we will provide you with additional information about the study so you can decide if you are interested in participating. We will ask you a few questions to see if you are eligible for the study.

Why participate?  
  • This study collects information to try to understand how to support and improve the mental health of LGBTQ+ people in small cities and rural areas of the United States.
  • Your participation can help ensure public health resources have the greatest positive impact for LGBTQ+ communities.
  • You can receive up to $100 in electronic gift cards (your choice of Amazon, Walmart, or Target) for completing 5 surveys ($20 each) over a year, and an additional $20 for completing a follow-up survey on preferences for using a mobile app to support mental health in year two.
Please note that it may take up to 10 business days (2 weeks), in most cases, for study staff to contact eligible participants about enrollment in the study. Once enrolled, participants will receive a link to complete the first survey (also called “baseline survey”).

Compensation will be provided after study staff have reviewed survey responses for accuracy and completeness. If you have any questions, you can contact us at REALM@emory.edu.

Who are we?  
  • A group of public health researchers at Johns Hopkins and Emory University dedicated to improving mental health outcomes for LGBTQ+ communities.
What happens next?  
  • Before you can be enrolled in the study, we have a few questions that we need to ask to see if you are eligible to participate.
  • If you are determined to be eligible, you will be asked to provide contact information (e.g., email address, phone number) so we can contact you about enrollment in the study.
  • If you are not eligible, we may ask you to provide an email address so we can contact you about future research studies you may be eligible for. This is completely optional.
