Thank you for your interest in District Clay Center's Studio Technician program!
District Clay Center strives to cultivate and promote the ceramic arts in the DMV region through quality education, exhibitions, and a vast array of studio equipment. Our clay community embraces creativity, diversity, inclusion, respect, and a welcoming environment for students and artists of all levels.
To this end, District Clay currently provides regular instruction and specialized workshops in wheel-throwing, hand-building, slip-casting, and alternative firings; a library of ceramic literature; community events, including semi-annual sales; and exhibitions by regional students and artists.
DCC's studio technicians are vital to achieving these goals and running the center efficiently.
Studio Technician responsibilities include:
- General studio cleaning and maintenance
- Preparing new student shelves
- Moving clay and ceramic materials
- Pugging and recycling clay
- Mixing glazes
- Loading and unloading kilns

- Commit to at least 6 months of employment
- Have an undergraduate degree in ceramics, art, or related field OR have at least 6 months prior experience working in a ceramics studio
- Keep calm in a busy environment
- Pay attention to detail
- Possess excellent communication skills
- Willingness to take direction
- Respect and uplift people of diverse abilities, ages, ethnicities, genders, and races
- Understand or desire to learn about the inner workings of a ceramics studio
A note on accessibility:Many studio technician tasks involve physically lifting 25-50 lbs; however, applicants with accessibility needs are encouraged to apply to help with organizational tasks.
