All employers who use “regulated carcinogens” in the State of California must report that use in writing to Cal/OSHA when required by Title 8 California Code of Regulations section 5203 Carcinogen Report of Use Requirements. Regulated carcinogens include respirable crystalline silica.
Engineered stone, quartz, as well as natural quartz, granite, sandstone, and other stone products, contain crystalline silica. Cutting, grinding, chipping, sanding, drilling, finishing, or polishing of these products can release dangerous levels of silica dust into the air. Engineered stone has the most crystalline silica so it can produce higher levels of silica dust.
Breathing in silica dust leads to silicosis – an incurable, permanently disabling, and sometimes fatal lung disease. Early signs of silica dust exposure are not usually obvious. Employees exposed to silica dust are also at increased risk for tuberculosis, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and kidney disease.
If you have any employees with potential exposure to respirable crystalline silica, regardless of whether respirators are used, you must answer questions about your business:
