Breakfast After the Bell (BAB) Exemption Request

Requirements
Public schools must implement a Breakfast After the Bell (BAB) Program if:
  • They have a prior-year free and reduced-price percentage of 70% or more. Or, 
  • They utilize CEP or Provision 2 to provide universal free meals and have a school free claiming percentage of 70% or more. 
Exemptions
OSPI has developed two exemptions for required schools: 
  1. Schools where free and reduced-price participation Breakfast participation is equal to or greater than, 70% of the free and reduced-price Lunch participation. 
    • Calculation: ((Free Breakfasts Claimed in October + Reduced-Price Breakfasts Claimed in October) / (Free Lunches Claimed in October + Reduced-Price Lunches Claimed in October)) x 100 
  2. Alternative schools where implementing a BAB program would create an undue hardship due to the unique nature of alternative schools. 
An Exemption Request Form must be submitted for each school requesting an exemption to the BAB mandate.
