Traditional Health Worker Program

Traditional Health Workers (THWs) help individuals in their communities, provide physical and behavioral health services.
In the OHCC, the term THW is an umbrella term for two THW types: Personal Health Navigator and Community Health Worker.

THWs play a part in:

Lowering costs related to healthcare.
Supporting integration and whole person care.
Addressing health disparities in culturally appropriate ways.
Supporting community members to access healthcare services.
Understanding and addressing the social determinants of health.

Community Health Workers are frontline public health worker who are trusted members of the community and/or have an unusually close understanding of the community served.
Personal Health Navigators are individuals who provide information, assistance, tools, and support to enable patients to make the best healthcare decision.

As of this point, the Community Health Worker training is open only to Home Care Workers, Personal Support Workers and Personal Care Attendants. However, the Personal Health Navigator training is open to the public in addition to the providers listed above.

*Please note that the Oregon Home Care Commission does not provide stipends (payments) for Traditional Health Worker certification trainings.
