A Pledge for Climate Empowerment: Count Libraries In!

Make your voice heard!

During the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27), to be held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt from 6-18 November 2022, IFLA invites the global library field to call for recognition of libraries as partners in climate education, public awareness, training, public participation, public access to information, and international cooperation - the elements of action for climate empowerment (ACE).

You are invited to pledge your commitment to continuing to advance the role of libraries in empowering their communities to take climate action, and call on policymakers to recognise the role of libraries and library associations in reaching climate empowerment goals.

About Libraries in Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE)
The 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) recognised the need for greater activity on Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE), and so launched the Glasgow Work Programme on ACE.

Looking to the future, action must be taken by governments at the local and national level to implement the Glasgow Work Programme on ACE, and this action must be taken in partnership with libraries in order to reach citizens and learners of all ages.

During COP27, we therefore call on policymakers at all levels to count libraries in for ACE implementation!

Libraries have a unique position within their communities, urban spaces, schools, and universities. They are able to reach people of all demographics, championing universal access to information, countering disinformation, and enabling public participation.

They are hubs of lifelong learning, complementing formal education systems. They act as models of behaviours and lead by example. The documentary heritage collections they preserve and provide access to offer insight into historic trends, inform climate research, and spark imagination that leads to innovation.

Libraries have a role to play in each priority area of the Glasgow Work Programme on ACE. Read more about how libraries impact on the goals of Action for Climate Empowerment on our website

We pledge to continue our work to empower users to take part in climate action through our efforts to deliver climate education, public awareness, training, public participation, public access to information, and international cooperation to all members of society.

We call on policymakers during and after COP27 to count libraries in as partners in implementing action for climate empowerment.
