2022 Motivational Interviewing Training - Registration Form

MOTIVATIONAL INTERVIEWING (MI)
A Trauma Responsive & Equitable "Way of Being" with Others

“All change is self-change, to which clinicians are sometimes privileged witnesses and facilitators”

--from Motivational Interviewing, Helping People Change, 2013

This 3-hour learning session will focus on the most recent books by William R. Miller, PhD. Those who have received previous training or coaching in Motivational Interviewing, and/or those who are curious and want to deeply explore MI are invited to actively participate in this collaborative dialogue.

Dr. Miller’s newest books will provide the structure for our learning together:
  • “On Second Thought: How Ambivalence Shapes your Life.” (2022)
  • “Effective Psychotherapists: Clinical Skills that Improve Client Outcomes” (2021)*
  • “Lovingkindness: Realizing and Practicing Your True Self” (2017)

An additional book will also contribute ideas for our discussion. In “Compassionomics: The Revolutionary Scientific Evidence that Caring Makes a Difference” (2019), physician scientists Stephen Trzeciak and Anthony Mazzarelli focus on the power of compassion within healthcare services.

Conversations about change happen every day. External and visible behaviors are a common focus in many conversations of change. In our time together, we will consider internal thoughts/beliefs that may also be the focus of change conversations. Self-concept, attitudes, feelings, and acceptance (of us and the people we serve) are all examples of internal processes that support our daily efforts to bring caring and empowering conversations to the people we support.

Highlights of the topics that will be covered:
  • Empathy
  • Compassion
  • Hope
  • Affirmation
  • Acceptance
  • “The Nature of Ambivalence”
  • “Responding to Ambivalence”
*This book was written in collaboration with Theresa B. Moyers, PhD
