The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine propose to conduct a consensus study that will consider various aspects related to the global increase in myopia. The goals of the study are to assess the current mechanistic understanding of myopia pathogenesis and causes of its increased prevalence, to identify knowledge gaps and barriers to progress, and to develop a research agenda aimed at better understanding the biological and environmental factors that could explain its increasing incidence.
The study will be carried out by a committee of approximately 14 volunteer experts in the fields of:
- vision science (e.g., experts in cellular mechanisms regulating tissue growth)
- visual neuroscience
- ophthalmology
- optometry
- physical and physiological optics (including modelers of image formation)
- experimental methodology (such as longitudinal designs)
- human factors (such as experts in display design)
- behavior genetics
- communication
- computer sciences (e.g., computational imaging)
- psychology
- healthcare delivery
The National Academies are committed to enhancing diversity and inclusion in order to strengthen the quality of our work. Diverse perspectives contribute to finding innovative approaches and solutions to challenging issues. We encourage the nomination of volunteers who reflect the populations we serve and also welcome in particular nominations of candidates from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, women, and early- and mid-career professionals. We invite you to submit nominations for committee members and/or reviewers for this study by November 11, 2022.
