The Office of Multilingual Learners, in collaboration with Dr. Vanessa Santiago Schwarz invites bilingual educators and all educators servicing MLs/ ELLs grades K-5 to a hybrid professional learning sessions beginning November 10, 2022, 2022. These sessions will focus on Genre-based pedagogy, a language-centered framework for writing instruction grounded in the belief that all writing is about making choices to effectively communicate a message to a given audience.
Participants will engage in:

An overview of genre-based writing instruction and how it supports the development of critical language awareness and biliteracy in MLs/ELLs.

A closer look at the persuasive writing genre and how it can be implemented bilingually across grade levels.

A closer look at the “language of persuasive writing” and how to support critical language awareness across languages.

Application of this approach to develop writing instruction that supports biliteracy development.
