Developing Critical Language Awareness in Bilingual Writers Registration Form

The Office of Multilingual Learners, in collaboration with Dr. Vanessa Santiago Schwarz invites bilingual educators and all educators servicing MLs/ ELLs grades K-5 to a hybrid professional learning sessions beginning November 10, 2022, 2022. These sessions will focus on Genre-based pedagogy, a language-centered framework for writing instruction grounded in the belief that all writing is about making choices to effectively communicate a message to a given audience. 

 Participants will engage in:  

  • An overview of genre-based writing instruction and how it supports the development of critical language awareness and biliteracy in MLs/ELLs. 

  • A closer look at the persuasive writing genre and how it can be implemented bilingually across grade levels. 

  • A closer look at the “language of persuasive writing” and how to support critical language awareness across languages. 

  • Application of this approach to develop writing instruction that supports biliteracy development.  


The sessions in this hybrid professional opportunity build upon each other.  These dates and times are:

  • Thursday, November 10, 2022, from 9:00 am-3:00 pm in person session (location TBD)
  • Thursday, December 1,2022, from 1:00-2:30 pm Virtual Synchronous Session  
  • Thursday, December 8,2022 from 1:00-2:30 pm Virtual Synchronous Session
