BIO 253 SPRING 2023 APPLICATION IS NOW CLOSED.
Welcome to the application for
Bio 253: Orientation to the Health Professions. Thank you for your interest in this course. This course matches students with health clinicians in San Luis Obispo County to gain
shadowing experience and learn about a health career of interest. It is intended for second+ year students with GPAs of 3.0 or higher, and who demonstrate a genuine interest in pursuing a career in healthcare.
Please note: Some sites require extensive paperwork to be completed (Current flu, TB clearance, updated COVID vaccinations, drug test, criminal background check) that must be submitted prior to placement. Please only apply if you are willing to provide this documentation prior to the start of the term.
The class is tentatively scheduled to meet on Tuesdays from 6:10-8:00 pm during week 1 (April 4), week 2 (April 11) and week 10 (June 6). Attendance is required on those dates, and there are no exceptions, so please only apply if you will be able to attend class on those dates.
You may save your responses to this application and return to complete it later (see grey link at top of page). However, the application is due no later than
Friday, March 3 at 11:59pm. You will be asked to upload a resume as part of your application. Please refer to career services for assistance with completing your resume. Information on working with a career counselor for your college can be found
here. You will also be asked to submit your availability as well as responses to one short answer question. For help with your responses, please utilize your career counselor and/or the
writing and learning center.
If you are selected, you will hear no later than
Friday, March 31 (End of Open Enrollment) with a permission number to add the class. You may or may not receive your site placement at that time, but will receive your site placement information no later than week 1 during our first class meeting.
If you are selected for Bio 253, please keep in mind that you will likely be required to submit the following: proof of having a recent physical exam, proof of a negative TB test, proof of your recent immunization record with Covid vaccination and booster, flu vaccination and have a background check performed.
Dignity health clinic placements also require a negative drug test and a headshot that will be used for a student ID badge.
If you are not selected, you will also hear by
March 31. This class is offered twice/year, and if you are not selected you will have the opportunity to apply for the class in the future.
