Heggerty Phonemic Awareness: Spanish Curriculum in Bilingual/Dual Language Settings An Overview of Phonological Awareness

The first set of training will be a two-part series with part 1 highlighting the what and the why of phonemic and phonological awareness. Participants will gain an understanding of why this work is important, not just in English literacy development, but Spanish literacy development as well. In addition to building an understanding around phonological awareness, participants will learn about phonics instruction, and the presenter will share about the importance of cross-linguistic transfer in bilingual and dual language settings. Part 2 will teach participants how to implement the English and Spanish curriculum in their classrooms. A lesson will be modeled for the participants and the participants will be able to compare and contrast both the English and Spanish curriculum.

Attendance to both sessions is expected:

  1. Session 1: Part 1 - August 1st: 9:30-10:45 AM EST: The What and the Why - Phonemic and Phonological Awareness in English and Spanish.
  2. Session 1: Part 2 - August 2nd: 9:30-10:45 AM EST : The How - What does the scope and sequence look like in both English and Spanish? What are key differences within the curriculum?
