This application contains important information about the ACCESS program, including the role and duties of Regional ACCESS Ambassadors. Please take time to read this information carefully so you are aware of the commitments we are requesting Regional Ambassadors to make.

Here are some things you should know when starting this application:

This is not a job application. Although Ambassadors receive stipends for their participation, Ambassadors are considered volunteers, not employees.

What is ACCESS California?

ACCESS California (or 'ACCESS' for short) is a program of Cal Voices funded by the California Mental Health Services Act (known as the 'MHSA' or 'Prop. 63') and by the Council on Criminal Justice and Behavioral Health ('CCJBH'). ACCESS stands for Advancing Client and Community Empowerment through Sustainable Solutions.

ACCESS is a client/consumer-led statewide mental health advocacy, public policy, education, and outreach program focused on equipping stakeholders throughout California's Public Mental Health System ('PMHS') to take action in their own local communities to build lasting positive change.

ACCESS is currently in a three-year contract that began November 1, 2020 and will run through June 30, 2023. ACCESS is currently in its fifth year of programming since its inception.

What's an ACCESS Ambassador?

ACCESS is seeking individuals throughout California who identify as Behavioral Health Clients/Consumers to participate in our program as volunteer subject-matter experts. These Regional ACCESS Ambassadors provide insight and guidance to our program on Behavioral Health and Criminal Justice involvement policy matters, attend ACCESS-sponsored trainings and state-level events, and perform local-level outreach, engagement, and advocacy in their home communities.

Regional Ambassadors serve as regional representatives of the ACCESS program, expanding mental health advocacy across the state. By recruiting and networking with other stakeholders in their communities, Regional Ambassadors help us establish and strengthen local advocacy networks, increase stakeholder participation in the community planning process, and ensure county mental health systems incorporate client/consumer voice and choice in local-level policy planning, programming decisions, and services delivery.

Regional ACCESS Ambassadors receive stipends for performing specific training, outreach, engagement, and advocacy activities. ACCESS also pays Ambassadors' travel and lodging expenses to attend certain ACCESS-sponsored events. *However, due to COVID-19 travel and lodging is something that is suspended until further notice.
