Apostle Islands 2022

Application
Apostle Islands Kayak Trip
July 14-17, 2022

Project Success is partnering with Wilderness Inquiry this year to provide an outdoor adventure that is accessible for students with physical, health, developmental, social and cognitive needs.  This trip is designed to help students who might require extra support to access and enjoy outdoor recreational activities.

This 4-day adventure takes us to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore on the South Shore of Lake Superior. Students will experience a series of sea kayaking and land-based day trips from Wilderness Inquiry’s Little Sand Bay Base Camp. These trips could include beautiful Sand Island, the Mawikwe Sea Caves, Bark Bay Slough, or the shipwrecks of Red Cliff Bay.

How do I sign up my student?

Carefully read through the following information and complete this online application by FRIDAY, May 20, 2022

NOTE: Space on this trip is very limited and may fill up before the April 29th deadline.

Spots on the trip are filled in the order that completed registrations are received. We accept registrations until the trip is full and will continue to accept them after the deadline if space is still available or for a standby list.  All students who complete registrations will receive a call to let them know if they have a spot on the trip or if they are on standby.

It is very important that if you decide to cancel your spot, that you tell us immediately so we can let someone from the standby list on the trip. There is no refund of payment after May 31st.

The Cost

The cost of the trip is $500 per student.  Need-based discounts are available for up to $450 of the trip cost.  We ask that if you do have the funds to cover your trip, that you pay the full amount.  However, Project Success wants to ensure that we include all students who really want to go, regardless of cost.  If you are not able to pay the full $500, we appreciate that you pay what you can toward your trip fee.  Your contribution will help us to continue bringing young people on outdoor adventures each year and to serve a larger community of students.

Trip Meeting:

There will be a meeting in May for all students who have a confirmed spot on the trip and their parent/guardian(s).  At the meeting we will go over important trip details and the packing list. You will receive an email to inform you of the date, time and location of the meeting.

Trip Details

An accessible bus will transport us to and from Wilderness Inquiry’s Little Sand Bay Base Camp, located just north of Bayfield, Wisconsin and about 4.5 hours from Minneapolis. The bus will leave at 8am from the Project Success office in Minneapolis.  A detailed schedule will be sent to your home closer to the trip date.

When we arrive at Base Camp, our Wilderness Inquiry guides will help get us ready for our kayaking adventure. All participants will need to wear a wetsuit and life vest (provided by Wilderness Inquiry) and will need to be in the water on the first day. On the introductory paddle day, Wilderness Inquiry staff will facilitate a paddle safety talk, go over equipment, and then do wet exits in a tandem kayak—two people at a time. If you have any questions or concerns about your student getting into a wetsuit or being in the water, please call Jenny B at 612-874-1277 or email jennyb@projectsucess.org.

Trip activities will include sea kayaking to Sand Island, Mawikwe Sea Caves, Bark Bay Slough, or the shipwrecks of Red Cliff Bay. (Kayak destinations are weather and wind permitting.) There will also be land based day-trips and evenings at camp roasting marshmallows by the fire with new friends.

The last day we will leave base camp at 1:30pm and travel back to Minneapolis. We should return at about 6:00pm. There will be a cell phone on the bus for students to call home with the estimated arrival time.  Students will need to be picked up from the Project Success office.

During the trip, Project Success staff will be in the office to answer questions or you may contact the Base Camp at (715) 779-3328.

What if my student needs a PCA or more one-on-one assistance?

In this application, there is a space to tell us how much personal assistance your student will need.  Please be as detailed as possible in describing the support your student requires.

What do we bring?

A list of what to bring is provided at the completion of the registration and we will talk about this at the meeting in May.  Call Project Success with any questions.  Wilderness Inquiry and Project Success have extras of many things that you can borrow!
