Welcome
Washington’s current cultural competency standards were created in 2009. In 2021, students, families, educators, partners, and policymakers requested updated standards to create stronger, more supportive student-centered learning environments. Through ESSB 5044, the Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB) is leading a coordinated, community-centered effort to review and revise Washington’s current educator standards and ensure the alignment of those standards with cultural competency, diversity, equity, and inclusion (CCDEI) practices. The revised standards will apply to school district staff training and the use for educator roles in the preparation of educator candidates and in professional learning opportunities throughout an educator’s career.
Your voice is critical
Community engagement has been a vitally important piece of our drafting process, and we continue to prioritize opportunities for our partners and the public to help shape the future of equity in education. After collecting extensive feedback on the first draft of the revised standards this summer, we would like to invite various “role” groups in education (e.g., teachers, paraeducators, principals, preparation programs, families, k-12 students, etc.) to provide insight on what indicators could be observed when educators demonstrate the new draft standards successfully.
After selecting your role type, you will then choose which standards you would like to provide input on (you may select all four). Each standard has three questions. The feedback we collect will help shape implementation guidance for how the standards can better support student and community needs.
This survey is voluntary, and you will remain anonymous as no personally identifying information is required. The responses you provide may be used, all or in part, for the purposes of policymaking, educational outreach, presentations, or publications.
Thank you for your time and contributions.
