2022 Seattle Advanced Alpine Rock Application

Welcome

Thank you for your interest in the 2022 Seattle Advanced Rock Climbing course. This course will present rock skills and techniques tailored to committing alpine rock objectives in the Pacific Northwest.  The curriculum will include technical systems, movement, and route skills. We bring these elements together for climbers who wish to pursue Grade IV/V alpine rock routes such as the North Ridge of Mt. Stuart, Backbone Ridge on Dragontail Peak, and the NE Buttress on Slesse.

To be accepted in this course, you must be comfortable leading 5.8 rock on gear (trad), be fit enough to hike a 4,000' mountain such as Mailbox in 135 minutes with 35lbs, and be able to travel rugged terrain with little difficulty.  These are the preferred requirements. Your application will be evaluated and considered on its overall merit. Your development as an alpine climber is a journey that should be a process of intentional and deliberate practice. Approach submission of this application is another step in that journey. If you are not accepted, feedback and suggestions for your next steps are available upon request.

Before starting the application, have your climbing resume available so you can identify:
  • Climbing, first aid, and navigation courses you have taken;
  • Technical and non-technical climbs you have done as well as general back-country experience;
  • Your history of volunteering for The Mountaineers as well as other organizations
If you have questions about this application or have started an application and have not completed it but want to continue without re-entering information, please email wjpappas@gmail.com.

We are planning the course with high expectations, yet with caution. After serious consideration, there remain some conditions for executing the course. We are balancing the needs and requirements of the stakeholders; students, instructors, Mountaineers organization, and those we encounter while performing the activities. We will be conforming to the directives issued nationally, regionally, and organizationally. We will monitor the conditions in our communities and the virus's trajectory to determine whether the course will take place. This decision will be made by March 31.

Some specific requirements include the following:
-The Mountaineers Program Center needs to be open and available.
-The vaccine must be widely available.
-All participants and leaders must agree to the COVID-19 Code of Conduct before participating in this Mountaineers course.
