As part of our Bilingual Expert Series, NYCDOE, in collaboration with Dr. Marcela Ossa Parra invites bilingual educators servicing MLs grades K-8, to a three-day synchronous institute beginning March 8, 2022. Participants will learn how to design contextualized language instruction that leverages bilingual students’ cultural and linguistic resources.
During these three ninety-minute sessions, participants will:

gain familiarity with the theories and research informing the design of contextualized language instruction that engages’ MLs/ ELLs’ cultural and linguistic resources.

reflect on criteria for selecting culturally and linguistically rich texts that enable students to examine how language works in texts to create meaning.

learn and practice how to identify semantic, morphological, and syntactic features in texts to support their MLs/ ELLs in gaining awareness of how language works in texts to create meaning.

learn instructional approaches for stimulating their MLs/ ELLs to establish connections between languages and dialects.
