Call for Nominations of Experts
Standing Committee on Biotechnology Capabilities and National Security Needs
The biotechnology and life science enterprise is highly distributed, multi-disciplinary, and international, which limits the identification, adoption, and influence of specific biotechnologies to meet national security needs. These limitations can be overcome through active engagement with industry, academia, other research institutions, and additional biotechnology stakeholders including funders.
This committee will facilitate active engagement between the U.S. national security community and a broad and diverse group of biotechnology stakeholders from a variety of organizational sectors. The committee will work to identify advanced biotechnologies that have promising capabilities to meet national security needs, and to identify early-stage research that may lead to new or enhanced biotechnologies.
The committee’s work will include horizon scanning of advances in the life sciences, biotechnology and associated fields, facilitation of biotechnology-focused workshops, and production of workshop summaries in the form of Proceedings-in-Brief. An ad hoc committee associated with the committee will produce a consensus report based on the workshop discussions and Proceedings-in-Brief.
The full statement of task is available here.
You are invited to nominate experts, including yourself, to serve on this committee. We are seeking a committee of experts from industry, academia, nonprofit organizations, and national laboratories in areas including, but not limited to:
- Life sciences research, including molecular and cellular biology, computational biology, biophysics, biochemistry, genomics, neuroscience, microbiology, and other relevant fields
- Physical, mathematical, and computational sciences involving biological information, materials, and/or technologies
- Data science in biology
- Multi-omics, systems biology, and associated scientific expertise
- Bioengineering, synthetic biology, and biomaterials
- Bio-inspired design, bioelectronics, biosensing, DNA storage, and other similar technology developments
- Biotechnology convergence
- Biotechnology innovation
- National security
- Ethics
The National Academies are committed to enhancing diversity and inclusion in order to strengthen the quality of our work. Diverse perspectives contribute to finding innovative approaches and solutions to challenging issues. We encourage the nomination of volunteers who reflect the populations we serve and also welcome in particular nominations of candidates from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, women, and early- and mid-career professionals.
We invite you to submit nominations for committee members for this activity by 11:59p.m. PT on June 3. Self-nominations are welcome.
