NMAI Repatriation Consultation Request

Repatriation Consultation Request

Repatriation consultation visits to the Cultural Resources Center of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) are for officially designated representatives who have been authorized to conduct repatriation business on behalf of a tribe or community.

All visits related to repatriation must be arranged through the Repatriation Department. The NMAI routinely supports up to two representatives for two days of consultation, depending on available funds and the specific consultation needs. Additional representatives are always welcome for the consultation, although additional expenses must be covered by the tribe or individual traveler. When possible, the NMAI prioritizes funding consultations by tribes who want to pursue repatriation but have not previously arranged a consultation.

To complete this form, you will need to provide your full contact information, two preferred consultation dates, and the total number of guests in the delegation. Due to the work required to prepare for a consultation, the NMAI may not be able to accommodate requests submitted less than three months in advance of requested dates.
The NMAI respects your privacy and does not share your information with other organizations.
