A Report Series on Progress Toward Human Health and Community Resilience in the Gulf of Mexico Region

A Report Series on Progress Toward Human Health and Community Resilience in the Gulf of Mexico Region

The Gulf Research Program of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is undertaking a study to examine key challenges in the Gulf of Mexico region related to human health and community resilience and to develop an approach to assess progress in these areas over time.

This study is part of a four-part series of consensus studies which aims to produce a set of scholarly volumes on offshore oil and gas system safety, environmental stewardship and protection, and human health and community resilience. This study will provide an important basis for assessing progress in health and community resilience across the Gulf, and subsequent volumes in this series will refer to this study to track the progress and provide advice for enhancing the health and community resilience.

A Report Series on Progress Toward Human Health and Community Resilience in the Gulf of Mexico Region will be carried out by a committee of approximately 10 volunteer experts in the fields of:

  • Community resilience
  • Health and community resilience metrics/measures
  • Disaster preparedness and recovery
  • Natural or manmade disasters
  • Public health
  • Population health
  • Public policy
  • Social and behavioral sciences

The National Academies are committed to enhancing diversity and inclusion in order to strengthen the quality of our work. Diverse perspectives contribute to finding innovative approaches and solutions to challenging issues. We encourage the nomination of volunteers who reflect the populations we serve and also welcome in particular nominations of candidates from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, women, and early- and mid-career professionals.

The committee will serve for 18 months to (1) Review major efforts (past or present), common challenges, and/or key priorities in health and community resilience across the five Gulf of Mexico states. (2) Develop an approach that could be used to assess the progress of health and community resilience across the Gulf of Mexico region over time through future studies in this series. (3) Consider opportunities that could lead to significant progress in enhancing or improving health and community resilience across the Gulf of Mexico region. And (4) Identify major challenges or critical gaps that could be addressed to advance health and community resilience in the Gulf of Mexico region, including potential innovative or transformative approaches.

We invite you to submit nominations for committee members for this study by 03/04/2021.
