Delegate's Survey for the 71st GSC

This survey will close on Friday, April 16th at 5pm.
1. Are your answers your opinion or the opinion of your group?
2. Cooperation with the Professional Community (CPC)  Item A Discuss progress report on LinkedIn page implementation.

Background: An advisory action from the 2018 Conference approved the creation of a LinkedIn page where professionals can find accurate information about AA.

Did you know AA has a page on LinkedIn?
3. Did you agree that AA should maintain a presence on LinkedIn?
4. Cooperation with the Professional Community (CPC)  Item B - Consider a request to create a pamphlet for mental health professionals.

Background: There currently is no pamphlet that speaks directly to mental health professionals. This pamphlet is intended to help mental health professionals become better qualified to help a person who has a desire to stop drinking.

Did you think AA should develop this pamphlet?
5. Corrections Item A - Consider request for a review of all Corrections related literature to replace terms such as "inmate" and "offender" with less stigmatizing language.

Background: Submitted by an area Corrections committee that felt that the terms inmate and offender are primarily used by the judicial system. As such, they should not be used in AA literature aimed at AA members or potential AA members behind the walls. It is felt that less stigmatizing terms in AA literature would be an aid in their recovery.

Do you agree that using terms other than "inmate" or "offender" would benefit AA members or potential AA members in correctional facilities?
6. Finance Item A1 - Consider request to remove the examples of possible distribution between service entities from the pamphlet "Self-Support: Where Money and Spirituality Mix".

Background: The submitter feels that even though the section is titled "Sample of Group Contributions to AA Service Entities", it could be seen that GSO is sanctioning this particular distribution.

Do you agree that the sample with possible distribution between service entities should be removed from this pamphlet?
7. Finance Item A2 - Consider request to add wording to the pamphlet "Self-Support: Where Money and Spirituality Mix" that emphasizes the need to frequently review the distribution of funds to service entities.

Background: The submitter feels that once a group decides on the distribution of funds to service entities, it is rarely reviewed.

Do you think this addition is needed?
8. Does your group review the contributions it makes to service entities?
9. Finance Item G - Review the Conference-approved maximum annual contribution of $5,000 from an individual.

Background: The maximum annual contribution was raised from $3,000 to $5,000 in 2018.

Do you think the annual maximum contribution from an individual should be increased?
10. If you made a contribution as an individual in the past year, did you use the on-line feature at aa.org?
11. Grapevine & La Vina Item D - Review the progress report on development of an Instagram account.

Background: As part of ongoing efforts to explore opportunities to use social media to inform the public about AA, the possibility of creating an Instagram account is being considered. To begin, this account would post Grapevine and La Vina content from current magazines only.

Are you in favor of developing an Instagram account to post material from Grapevine and La Vina?
12. Grapevine & La Vina Item E - Review suggested gender-neutral options for the AA Preamble.

Background: The current AA Preamble states in part:

Alcoholics Anonymous is a Fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.

AA Grapevine Board has identified the following 4 possibilities:
1. Alcoholics Anonymous is a Fellowship of people who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.

2. Alcoholics Anonymous is a community of people who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.

3. Alcoholics Anonymous is a Fellowship for sharing experience, strength and hope to solve a common problem and to help others to recover from alcoholism.

4. Alcoholics Anonymous is a community for sharing experience, strength and hope to solve a common problem and to help others to recover from alcoholism.

Do you agree with changing the AA Preamble to use gender-neutral language?

13.

If you agree with changing the AA Preamble, which one of the 4 options above do you prefer?

14. If you agree with changing the AA Preamble, do you agree with the change from "Fellowship" to "community"?
15. Literature Item B2 - Consider an audit of the first 164 pages of the book Alcoholics Anonymous.

Background: The suggestion is to form a study committee to audit the first 164 pages of the Big Book with the purpose of identifying changes that can be made to make the Big Book more reflective of the A.A. membership composition. The focus should be on identifying the following for possible change:
  • Pronoun usage – where possible the gender-neutral form should be incorporated.
  • Passages or sections that are no longer consistent with or relevant when taken in context of society in general or the A.A. membership composition.
Examples of changes consistent with the proposal:
  • Pronoun usage: From the Big Book page 17, the sentence below could readily be changed.
Current: “But the ex-problem drinker who has found this solution, who is properly armed with facts about himself, ...”

Proposed: “But the ex-problem drinker who has found this solution, who is properly armed with facts about themselves, ...”

  • An example of a passage that no longer reflects A.A. membership and a proposed change:
Current: "The chances are that we have domestic troubles. Perhaps we are mixed up with women in a fashion we wouldn’t care to have advertised. We doubt if, in this respect, alcoholics are fundamentally much worse than other people. But drinking does complicate sex relations in the home. After a few years with an alcoholic, a wife gets worn out, resentful and uncommunicative.

Proposed: “The chances are that we have domestic troubles. Perhaps we are mixed up with someone in a fashion we wouldn’t care to have advertised. We doubt if, in this respect, alcoholics are fundamentally much worse than other people. But drinking does complicate sex relations in the home. After a few years with an alcoholic, a spouse gets worn out, resentful and uncommunicative.

Do you support these types of changes to pages 1 - 164 of the Big Book?
16. Literature Item C - Consider developing a Fifth edition of the book Alcoholics Anonymous.

Background: An Advisory Action of the 47th General Conference (1997) called for the development of a Fourth edition of Alcoholics Anonymous. The Fourth edition was published in 2001.

An item requesting the development of a Fifth edition of Alcoholics Anonymous first appeared on the agenda for the 68th General Conference (2018). This same agenda item, in one form or another, has appeared on every Conference agenda since then.

Do you support the development of a Fifth edition of the book Alcoholics Anonymous?
17. Literature Item E - Consider two requests to update the book Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions.

Background: The first suggested change is:

On page 117 it states:

"Nearly every sound human being experiences, at some time in life, a compelling desire to find a mate of the opposite sex with whom the fullest possible union can be made ..."

The suggested change is

"Nearly every sound human being experiences, at some time in life, a compelling desire to find a mate with whom the fullest possible union can be made ..."

Do you support this change?
18. Background: The second suggested change to the book Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions is:

On page 66 it states:

"No one wants to be angry enough to murder, lustful enough to rape, gluttonous enough to ruin his health."

The suggested change is

"No one wants to be angry enough to murder, gluttonous enough to ruin his health."

Do you support this change?
19. Literature Item I - Consider a request to update the pamphlet "Questions and Answers on Sponsorship".

Background: Page 10 and 12 of this pamphlet indicate AA experience suggests that it is best for "men to sponsor men, women to sponsor women" and that "if the group is large enough to allow a choice, sponsor and newcomer be of the same sex".

The suggestion is to replace the quoted text above with:

"AA custom does suggest one limitation: sponsorship should be avoided wherever a romantic entanglement might arise between sponsor and newcomer. We AA members, no matter how long we have been sober, remain thoroughly human, subject to emotions that might divert us from 'our primary purpose'."

Do you support this change?
20. Policy/Admissions Item J - Consider requests regarding participation of online groups in the General Service Structure.

Background: Six agenda items were submitted regarding the participation of online groups in the General Service Structure. The individual requests are:

J.1 - Consider a request from a local district that recognizes “Online Groups” as voting members of the district and asks that the Conference take action to grant “Online AA Groups” the same privileges as “Brick and Mortar Groups”.

J.2 - That the General Service Conference consider allowing participation of all virtual groups, not affiliated with a physical meeting space, by creating a 94th Area to our Service Structure that will encompass those A.A. groups (Note: there currently are 93 General Service areas).

J.3 - Adapt the General Service structure to recognize online-only groups as official groups. Without that recognition, members have no voice and are denied access to service opportunities.

J.4 - Consider allowing Virtual or Online Groups to register under their respective district and area instead of the Online Intergroup.

J.5 - Consider holding a discussion about how to give online only (virtual) meetings a voice and a vote in the General Service Structure and access to General Service Offices (GSO) services.

J.6 - Discuss the current procedure of referring non-face-to-face Groups to an entity outside the A.A. service structure to be listed and consider creating a Traditions based policy that meets the needs of the Fellowship and its Groups (Note: online groups are associated with the fictitious Area 95 at GSO for record keeping only and encouraged to connect with the Online Intergroup (O.I.A.A.) if they want to be listed as part of this international intergroup).

Do you currently belong to an online only group?
21. Did this group exist prior to the closing of in-person meetings due to COVID-19?
22. Will this group continue to exist online once in-person meetings resume?
23. Would this online group participate in General Service if given the chance? Examples would be electing a GSR, being involved in District and Area service.
24. Public Information Item B - Progress report on Google Ads performance.

Background: An Advisory Action of the 66th General Conference (2016) called for the creation of a Google Nonprofits Account. An Advisory Action of the 69th General Conference (2019) affirmed the implementation of Google AdWords/Grants for the purpose of providing information about A.A. to the public.

Google Nonprofit Accounts and Google AdWords/Grants are offered to any nonprofit organization. A Google AdWords/Grant is a grant of up to $10,000 per month of Google services offered to nonprofits to improve their online presence.

This year's Conference will review the progress report of a one month trial of using these services to improve our presence in Google search results.

Do you support the use of Google AdWords/Grants to improve the online presence of AAWS?
25. Public Information Item E - Consider a draft plan to create podcasts.

Background: The Communications Services Department has drafted a plan to create podcasts. This plan outlines a release schedule, a format that is easily repeatable and not overly complex, suggestions for possible content, and a draft of a pilot.

Do you support the development of AAWS podcasts?
