Florida Department of Education - Civics and Government Standards Review

Civics and Government Standards - Reviewer Information

Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS) establish the core content of the curricula to be taught in the state and specify the core content knowledge and skills that K-12 public school students are expected to acquire. Standards must be rigorous and relevant and provide for the logical, sequential progression of core curricular content that incrementally increases a student’s core content knowledge and skills over time.

On June 26, 2019, Governor Ron DeSantis signed House Bill (HB) 807, which amended section 1003.4156, Florida Statutes, requiring the Florida Department of Education to complete a review of the statewide civics education course standards by December 31, 2020. The department solicited public input on the K-12 Civics and Government Standard from June 5, 2020 to August 5, 2020. In addition to the public feedback, the department convened an expert group to review the standards and make recommendations for their review and revision.
