Input Tool: National Academies Nitrogen Workshop

Instructions and Background

Instructions

The Workshop on Reducing Health Impacts of Reactive Nitrogen in Ground and Surface Water from Agricultural Sources will explore where innovations can be applied to reduce tradeoffs between farm productivity and profitability and exposure to contaminated drinking water. The goal of the workshop is to build a shared understanding of the problem and the solution space. Please provide your input on the challenges to be overcome and the possible solutions.

By responding to this request, you agree that your input may be made public at the workshop and/or cited (with proper attribution to you) by the National Academies.

Background

Reducing Health Impacts of Reactive Nitrogen in Ground and Surface Water from Agricultural Sources: A Workshop of the EHMI
Nitrogen is a widely-used, essential input to crop production. Much of the nitrogen used in crop production is lost to the environment where it contributes to a cascade of negative impacts, including the contamination of drinking water. Nitrogen-contaminated drinking water can have adverse health impacts, including methemoglobinemia, a condition that inhibits the blood’s ability to carry oxygen around the body. This workshop of the Environmental Health Matters Initiative (EHMI) will explore where innovations can be applied to reduce tradeoffs between farm productivity and profitability and exposure to contaminated drinking water. The goal of the workshop is to build a shared understanding of the problem and the solution space.
