Future technical work of the EI Power Systems Committee

Introduction

What does the future hold for the power sector?
What will the power sector look like in 2030?  What are the key changes we are going to see in the next 10 years?
We do not know for sure, but the following things are likely to happen in the next 10 years:
- Green hydrogen will begin to be produced from offshore wind, but likely won't have a big role to play.
- Hydrogen hubs will be established to produce 'blue' hydrogen, and capture and store carbon offshore.
- Blue hydrogen used in CCGT power stations, and incorporated into the national gas network.
- Used EV batteries get a second life for static storage.
- Large expansion of battery storage, wind and solar.
- Increasing hybridisation of CCGT, wind and solar with battery storage.
- Other forms of energy storage begin to become more important towards the end of the decade.
- Large increases in energy generation required to meet the increased electrification of industry.
- New ICEs discontinued - major car manufacturers go electric or hybrid - big changes to forecourts and increases in power generation required.

The purpose of this survey
This short survey asks those working in the power industry to help the Energy Institute (EI) prioritise its future power generation work activities.  We have already produced a large amount of guidance (see Power generation | EI - Publishing (energyinst.org)) but what should we focus on in future?

On the next page, we list a number of energy transition topic areas where we think EI can have an impact - in terms of producing guidance, training, or other resources.   This survey asks you to prioritise 5 topic areas for us to focus on, and then to tell us some of the specific issues that should be addressed. The focus is on gaps in heath, safety, environment, efficiency or technology, and not on government policy or other areas.

The survey will take around 10 minutes to complete.

Data protection
Your responses are very important to us. Responses will be anonymised and processed in compliance with data protection legislation (GDPR).  Your responses will only be used for the purposes of determining future work activities of the EI.  Personal data will not be shared outside of the EI.
