The “best” (or at least, better) way to get HWTS products into the homes of users has long been a point of discussion amongst Network members. At the 2019 Annual Network Meeting, members decided to work toward best practices finding and nurturing markets for HWTS alongside some necessary subsidies for users. When market-based approaches and subsidized models work together, they can have the intended effect of more people benefitting from drinking safe water.
We have drafted a white paper titled “HWTS and Markets”, and would like your feedback, experience, and valued input to improve the paper. We plan to incorporate your feedback and produce a published version by mid-2021. Download the draft here:
The white paper aims to articulate why markets are important to the Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage (HWTS) sector. It establishes a common understanding of the importance of HWTS markets and its components. The paper also suggests 7 key principles that HWTS actors should follow to support the flourishing of HWTS markets and avoid undermining markets through well-intentioned actions with unintended negative consequences.
