Racial Consciousness Institute 5 - EQUITY LENS ON SCHOOL DISCIPLINE

Racial Consciousness Institutes
DESE is excited to announce its partnership with The Equity Imperative for 5 learning series throughout the 2020-2021 school year. Join us in a virtual learning series to Support Use of Tools and Continuation of Your Racial Equity Journey.

This virtual series will be broken up into five learning paths (topic areas). Each learning pathway will have three virtual sessions aligned with Equity Imperative’s  theory of action to Illuminate, Indicate and Navigate. Each learning pathway will have a specific focus based on the need identified, more details below. Each of the three virtual sessions within each pathway will be 2 hours in duration.

Please note, during the planning process, some of the numbering has changed on the Pathways since the first two registrations!

Learning Pathways Include:
  • PATHWAY #1 ANTI-RACISM TERMS AND PERSPECTIVES: This path will support participants in orienting themselves to the history of schools and the history of anti-racism, learning common terms and perspectives (recordings of Pathway #1 are available upon request)
  • PATHWAY #2 ANTI-RACIST FAMILY ENGAGEMENT: This path will support participants in unpacking the research on effective family engagement and developing strategies to ensure family engagement is aligned with an anti-racist approach
  • PATHWAY #3 ANTI-RACISM ADVOCATES: This path will support participants in seeing common pitfalls of leading equity-based work, and how best to navigate those pitfalls to keep the work alive
  • PATHWAY #4 ANTI-RACIST INSTRUCTION & CURRICULUM: This path will support participants to understand not just about what teachers need to know, but who teachers need to be to interrupt racist instructional practices and curriculum decisions.
  • PATHWAY #5 EQUITY LENS ON SCHOOL DISCIPLINE: This path will support educators to unpack the research on school discipline and develop strategies to interrupt inequitable systems
The registration below is for PATHWAY #5 only. Due to the anticipated goals of each path, we are prioritizing registration to participants that are available and able to participate in all three virtual sessions. If you do not think you will be able to participate in all three sessions, please note it in the comment text box below and please select "Recording ONLY".

The dates for PATHWAY #5 are: May 6, 13, and 20. All sessions are from 8AM to 10AM.

Registration priority will be given to Rethinking Discipline Participants, current and former Safe and Supportive Schools Grantees (FC335 and FC337), and Supporting Students' Behavioral and Mental Health and Wellness Grantees (FC 336/613).

Please note: The PD will be limited to 100 participants, so we ask that each school only register up to 5 people and register people that can commit, to the capacity possible, to attending all three sessions. District administrators are also welcome to register, but they will count as one of the school participants. We may have to limit the total number of people from each district if the demand is high. If more than 5 people are interested from one school, please email emily.m.taylor@mass.gov to be added to a waiting list.

Registration is open until May 3. By May 4, you will receive login information for the webinar.
