Global Health Experience Funding Application

Welcome to the Robert J. Havey, MD Institute for Global Health's online funding application for the Global Health Experience!

The application will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete once the materials described below are prepared. It is recommended that applicants prepare their answers and save them as a word document before beginning the application. You will not be able to save your application once you begin. Answers to the questions below should be no longer than 200 words.

These funds are available to Feinberg students and McGaw residents who wish to pursue:
  1. Global health rotations coordinated through the Havey Institute for Global Health, OR
  2. Rotations in the U.S. through the Department of Family and Community Medicine, Physical Therapy Program, or Physician Assistant Program. Funding for domestic rotations is not available to 1st and 2nd year medical students.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis but must be submitted a minimum of 60 days before the date of travel. Once applicants are notified of a decision they must complete the Payroll Processing steps. It may take an additional four to six weeks for Payroll to issue payment.

I. Items to prepare in advance:
  1. Please prepare an itemized budget with your application. Students may use general estimates for airfare, housing, immunizations, visa fees, etc. General estimates are acceptable. Click here to review Budget Reference Guide.
  2. A copy of your resume or CV (doc, docx, or pdf).
II. Application and Award Requirements:
  1. Funds provided by the Havey Institute for Global Health are made available chiefly for primary care, internal medicine, pediatrics, Ob/Gyn rotations, and student research projects in resource-limited settings. However, funding is also available for medical students participating in global health rotations with our affiliated partners located in high- to middle-income countries. All interested Feinberg medical students and McGaw residents are encouraged to apply.
  2. Credit-seeking students must have their chosen site approved for credit worthiness through the appropriate department.
  3. Medical students applying for support for an international rotation at an unaffiliated clinic/hospital must obtain approval by the Institute for Global Health before receiving funding. Residents must obtain approval from the McGaw Medical Center before receiving funding.
  4. If an award is made trainees need to complete a post-program evaluation within 30 days of returning from the funded trip, provide one photo, and fulfill one of the deliverable options listed in the award letter.
  5. Students must be registered as full-time students at the Feinberg School of Medicine and be in good standing at the time the student wishes to travel. McGaw residents and fellows are also eligible.
  6. The funds may be used for pre-travel immunizations, visa/passport fees, insurance, airfare, program fees, and room and board related to your global health rotation or research project.
III. Funding Restrictions:
  1. Students may not receive funding from more than one source at Northwestern University or Feinberg School of Medicine for a single trip, including but not limited to the Graduate School (MPH Program) or the Office of International Program Development.
  2. Travel funds may not be deferred and must be used for the intended purpose within the same academic year.
  3. Payments to FSM students are made through Payroll and the awards are considered taxable income. Payments to McGaw residents will be processed as reimbursements after travel is complete.
