Position Type: Part-time student assistant
Compensation: $16 per hour; Federal Work Study accepted
Hours: Hours per week will be set each quarter around class schedules. Hours will be an average of 10 hours/week and range each quarter 4 minimum -15 hours/week, between the hours of 8am-5pm, Mon-Fri. Occasional evening or weekend.
Supervised by: Sabrina Canady, Lead Academic Advisor (with additional guidance from other full-time Advisors and Lead PA)
Job Description
Role and Responsibilities: The CLA Advising Center employs motivated student leaders as Peer Advisors (PAs) to assist CLA students with academic advising and registration. PAs are expected to:
• Represent the College and University in a professional, responsible and inclusive manner
• Greet and check-in students who visit the CLA Advising Center
• Manage Zoom drop-in advising as support to students and advisors
• Respond to daily email and phone demands, including advising questions, appointment requests and campus resource referrals and initiate various student adobesign forms
• Help CLA students to understand General Education and major requirements
• Assist students with accessing and understanding their Degree Progress Report (DPR), AP & IB transfer credit, PolyProfile and Degree Planner
• Act as an informed resource for CLA students for matters related to Schedule Builder and registration
• Assist first year and second year students with general academic planning
• Understand and communicate University and College academic policies and procedures
• Assist students with reading and interpreting Assist.org for transfer credit
• Guide students in identifying the many academic success resources available at Cal Poly
• Perform other duties as assigned by Advisors to support the Advising Center’s mission
GRC & JOUR majors will have the chance to also work in their major departments, advising their own majors!
Qualifications Requirements
• College of Liberal Arts Student
• Ability to work for at least the full 2024-2025 academic year, preferably beyond
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Appreciation for and ability to work effectively with diverse populations of students, faculty, and staff
• Capacity for discretion, diplomacy and confidentiality
• Able to work independently with a responsible, self-motivated and proactive work ethic
• Resourcefulness
• Minimum GPA of 2.5 and remain in good academic standing during duration of employment
• Must be enrolled at Cal Poly in a minimum of 6 units
Training Commitment
Selected PAs must be available for mandatory trainings held during Spring quarter:
• University Wide PA training: half day TBD, likely the first or second Friday of Spring Quarter
• Training with CLA Advising, weeks 3-9 (about 3 hours, twice per week; day and time TBD)

AND the Wed, Thrus, Fri the week prior to the start of Fall 2024. This may conflict with WOW and you might not be able to do both.
Interviews for selected candidates will be as follows:
- Panel interviews will be scheduled for sometime between Feb 12-16
- Those invited for a second round interview with our current Peer Advisor team: will be scheduled for sometime between Feb 26-Mar 1.
